Homosexuality | Teen Essay on Discrimination | Teen Ink

Discrimination is an action or practice that excludes, disadvantages, or merely differentiates between individuals or groups of individuals on the basis of some ascribed or perceived trait, although the definition itself is subject to substantial debate. The sociological study of discrimination could be divided into two types of inquiries: discrimination as a social phenomenon and discrimination for other observed social phenomenon. Discrimination has been addressed by a wide range of disciplines as an explanatory object—including sociology, anthropology, political science, psychology, economics, and law—all seeking to shed light on why discrimination occurs and what conditions give rise to and reproduce its practice. What distinguishes a sociological approach to discrimination as an explanatory object from that in other disciplines, namely psychology or economics, is its insistence on looking at the macro level of analysis, explaining the phenomenon as a result of social processes not necessarily reducible to individual-level preferences or cognitive processes. Sociologists have also addressed discrimination as an explanation for an observed phenomenon of interest, namely social stratification: the unequal distribution of status, material benefits, and political rights.

Discrimination against homosexual - photo essay - …

In the year 1992 presidential campaigns, presidential candidate Bill Clinton made a comment that suggested that he would remove the law suggesting that homosexuals should not serve the military service for what they were (The Washington Times, LLC, 2011). Before this, any form of lesbianism; bisexual behavior, gay and homosexuality in general were not tolerated in the military. In the year 1993, President Bill Clinton passed an interim compromise that gave the Department of Defense an opportunity to review the issue of sexual orientation in the military. The Department of Defense was reviewing the ban and come up with analysis that would end and prevent discrimination of prospective members of the military by looking at or/and asking them questions on sexual orientation. In the year 1993 after the review was made, the staff gave in to the suggestion made on ending discrimination with regard to sexual orientation. The Chief of staff agreed with Bill Clinton to remove any question concerning sexual orientation that was included in the application list that recruited military servants. This issue was very serious and required a lot of attention such that in the same year, Armed House Senate Congress (SASC) had extensive hearings on the issue of discrimination of homosexuals. Finally, they came up with an approach described as "Don’t Ask Don’t Tell". Under the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell approach the Department of Defense were not allowed to ask questions that were aimed at finding out the sexual orientation of the prospective military members. These military servants were even expected to keep any issue of sexual orientation to themselves. The approach was against any person who made any move to talk about his or her sexual orientation or even if a person decided to make any statements that suggested that he or she was engaging in gay behavior. The Department of Defense put up consequences to making any form of such statements or rather if one made any speech that meant he was involved in sexual intercourse with a partner of the same sex. One would be denied enlistment if at all he made such statements and he would also be denied appointment if he was seeking employment from the military service. In this approach the service members were to be judged only with regard to conduct and not with regard to sexual orientation. Making any statement concerning one’s sexual orientation would create a presumption that he intended to do something prohibited but the one making such statements would be given a chance to refute the statement before dismissal commenced (Burrelli F., 2010).
