Death creates fear, and it is taboo to many people.
Yes, we now have a pretty good answer to the question of the earth's extent. But there are 63 other questions in Job 38-41! Note also that God limited Himself to questions that Job could comprehend. In 2,500 years scientists and explorers have gotten some insight into certain other questions as well. We have a good idea of how the morning dew forms, by radiative cooling of surface objects below the dew point of the surrounding air. A few lucky people have observed female deer giving birth to fawns. But at our present learning rate it will be thousands of years before we are ready for another set of questions from God.
But if in Noble Minds some Dregs remain,
Not yet purg'd off, of Spleen and sow'r Disdain,
Discharge that Rage on more Provoking Crimes,
Nor fear a Dearth in these Flagitious Times.
No Pardon vile Obscenity should find,
Tho' Wit and Art conspire to move your Mind;
But Dulness with Obscenity must prove
As Shameful sure as Importance in Love.
In the fat Age of Pleasure, Wealth, and Ease,
Sprung the rank Weed, and thriv'd with large Increase;
When Love was all an easie Monarch's Care;
Seldom at Council, never in a War:
Jilts rul'd the State, and Statesmen Farces writ;
Nay Wits had Pensions, and young Lords had Wit:
The Fair sate panting at a Courtier's Play,
And not a Mask went un-improv'd away:
The modest Fan was liked up no more,
And Virgins smil'd at what they blush'd before--
The following Licence of a Foreign Reign
Did all the Dregs of bold Socinus drain;
Then Unbelieving Priests reform'd the Nation,
And taught more Pleasant Methods of Salvation;
Where Heav'ns Free Subjects might their Rights dispute,
Lest God himself shou'd seem too Absolute.
Pulpits their Sacred Satire learn'd to spare,
And Vice admir'd to find a Flatt'rer there!
Encourag'd thus, Witt's Titans brav'd the Skies,
And the Press groan'd with Licenc'd Blasphemies--
These Monsters, Criticks! with your Darts engage,
Here point your Thunder, and exhaust your Rage!
Yet shun their Fault, who, Scandalously nice,
Will needs mistake an Author into Vice;
All seems Infected that th' Infected spy,
As all looks yellow to the Jaundic'd Eye.
It wasnot like death, but more like an image of life!
Some people suggest that the "second creation" of animals in Genesis 2 refers to God creating one more animal of each in the Garden of Eden, so that Adam could name them as they paraded by. This is a valid theory; however, the Bible doesn't say that. Here is Genesis 2:18-20 in the King James Version: "18 And the Lord God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.' 19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them; and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him." The Genesis text does not say "one more animal" or "another animal of each kind." So this viewpoint is just a theory. We wonder why God didn't simply bring in a few animals from outside the Garden for Adam to look at. Furthermore, if the "one more animal" interpretation of Genesis 2 is correct we would have to conclude that Adam himself is one more human, since humans were already created in Genesis 1.
They go to the death,as to a bridal bed, and sacrifice themselves or others without remorse at the shrine of love, of honour,of religion, or any other prevailing feeling.
However, this basic definition of death only perpetuates fear.
This every one knows, and will readily allow upon being suggested, yetstill cannot behold, nor even cast a thought upon those objects without shuddering; for knowing that aliving person must suffer grievously under such appearances, they become habitually formidable to themind, and strike a mechanical horror, which is increased by the customs of the world around us."There is usually one pang added voluntarily and unnecessarily to the fear of death, by our affecting tocompassionate the loss which others will have in us.
Wethink, how we should feel, not how the dead feel.
There is an admirable passage on this subject in TUCKER'S Light of Nature Pursued,' which I shall transcribe, as by much the bestillustration I can offer of it."The melancholy appearance of a lifeless body, the mansion provided for it to inhabit, dark, cold, closeand solitary, are shocking to the imagination; but it is to the imagination only, not the understanding;for whoever consults this faculty will see at first glance, that there is noting dismal in all thesecircumstances: if the corpse were kept wrapped up in a warm bed, with a roasting fire in thechamber, it would feel no comfortable warmth therefrom: were the store of tapers lighted up as soonas day shuts in, it would see not objects to divert it; were it left at large it would have no liberty, nor ifsurrounded with company would be cheered thereby; neither are the distorted features expressions ofpain, uneasiness, or distress.
